Twin Cities Home Improvement Tips: Before You Paint

Before buying paint for a Twin Cities room refresh, check what the walls need underneath it. A crack, leftover wallpaper adhesive or a rough patch can still show through a new finish. This checklist helps homeowners in Shoreview, Minneapolis, St. Paul and nearby suburbs put the work in a sensible order.

1. Separate cosmetic work from problems paint cannot fix

Start with a walk through the room in daylight. Note cracks, nail pops, stains, peeling areas and rough repairs. Take pictures before moving furniture so you can describe the same spots when asking for an estimate.

A horizontal hairline crack in wall drywall is not a diagnosis by itself. The wall material, whether the crack changes, and signs of moisture or movement matter. A stable drywall joint needs a different repair plan from a crack in a concrete basement wall. Do not assume a narrow crack is harmless because it is small.

If a crack is growing, returns after repairs, appears alongside sticking doors, or sits on a bowed wall, arrange an evaluation before covering it. Dampness and new water stains need their source addressed first. Painting and cosmetic drywall repair do not correct structural movement or water entry.

For the repair sequence after the cause has been addressed, see our horizontal hairline crack in wall repair guide. Keep that guide handy when discussing whether a seam needs re-taping rather than another layer of filler.

2. Remove wallpaper before deciding the final wall finish

Wallpaper can hide damaged drywall paper, old patches and uneven surfaces. Try a small, inconspicuous area first rather than soaking an entire wall. Protect floors and trim, and follow the removal product's directions. Water and electrical outlets do not mix; arrange safe protection before wet work.

Once the covering is off, check for remaining adhesive and damaged wall facing. Painting directly over glue or loose paper can leave an uneven finish. Let cleaned surfaces dry, then assess repairs and the primer needed for the actual substrate. A wall that looks smooth while damp may show ridges once it dries.

If removing wallpaper is part of your Minneapolis room update, our wallpaper removal in Minneapolis and the Twin Cities page covers the service. Combine removal, wall repair and repainting in the written scope so those steps are not treated as unexpected extras.

3. Match wall texture before painting the room

A flat repair on a textured wall can remain obvious even when the color is right. Compare the existing texture in side lighting, where bumps and edges are easier to see. Identify whether the surrounding finish is smooth, orange peel, knockdown or another texture before choosing a repair method.

Practice on scrap material first. Feather the edges of the patch into the surrounding wall rather than leaving a hard rectangle. Allow compound and texture to dry as directed, then prime the repair to even out absorption before painting. Paint sheen also affects how much a patch stands out.

Our how to match wall texture guide explains matching in more detail. For larger seam repairs, the sheetrock taping and finishing guide covers the separate preparation stages. If several repairs overlap, ask whether refinishing the whole wall is more practical than chasing individual spots.

4. Measure surfaces, not just the room's floor area

Paint quantity starts with the surfaces being painted. Measure wall lengths and height, identify ceilings and trim separately, and decide how many coats the selected coating requires. Fresh patches, bare materials, a major color change and textured walls can affect the product system and coverage.

Use our paint calculator as a planning aid, then check the specific paint and primer labels. A coverage estimate is not a promise that every wall will use the same amount. Include primer as its own item rather than assuming finish paint replaces it.

Test color samples in the room's actual daylight and evening lighting. In a Minnesota winter, windows may stay closed, so plan suitable temperature, airflow and drying conditions according to the coating instructions. Low odor does not eliminate ventilation needs.

5. Put household access into the plan

Before work starts, agree on furniture handling, floor protection, access to bedrooms and the sequence of rooms. Discuss pets and anyone sensitive to coatings or dust. Keep escape routes and everyday paths clear; a room-by-room plan can be more useful than taking every room out of use at once.

On homes built before 1978, old coatings may contain lead. Ask about testing and applicable safety requirements before scraping or sanding. Do not treat unknown old paint as an ordinary DIY dust-cleanup job. Our lead-safe painting information explains questions to raise before work is planned.

A practical project example from Fridley

The photo at the top of this article is real drywall taping and mudding work from our Fridley gallery. It shows a preparation stage, not a before-and-after crack diagnosis. Taping, compound, sanding and priming are separate steps; finish paint belongs after the wall is ready. See more drywall project photos or discuss the surfaces involved on our drywall repair service page.
